SLSD Board adopts new mission statement, discusses priorities for school year
At last Monday’s School Board Work Session the South Lane School District Board of Directors unanimously voted to adopt a new mission statement for the school district and discussed belief’s, values and priorities for this school year.
Over the last three months the Board has worked with district leadership and the Oregon School Board Association to discuss and reflect on the work happening in the school district.
The Board felt the theme of “Children Come First,” is the ultimate mission of what the district strives to do everyday. They also discussed how they could also incorporate a broader message that speaks both to the work happening in the classroom and to the importance of students and staff working and learning in a positive and safe environment.
After much thought and discussion they adopted the new mission statement:
Children Come First
Always Learning, Teaching, Caring
Safe, Respectful, and Inclusive Schools and Community
Please refer to the Superintendent’s Message for more information on the new mission statement for the district.
Next, the Board reviewed and revised, along with district officials, the Board’s beliefs and values statements. The superintendent will continue to work with the board and district officials on revising and drafting new beliefs and values. They will then be presented to the board for discussion and approval.
The Board also discussed and worked through their priorities for this school year. The Board felt strongly that it was important to focus the next few months on prioritizing projects for the remaining bond dollars and to discuss the future of Latham Elementary School.
The Board is moving forward with the OSBA process to develop Board Priorities and District Goals in the Spring 2019. This would include the creation and participation of a District Leadership Team (DLT). The DLT would consist of a cross-section of district/building administrators, teachers, classified staff, parents, and students. Student input will also be gathered from the Student Advisory meetings. The process also includes developing recommendations for identifying strategies, outcome measures, and monitoring progress toward meeting Board Priorities and District Goals.

At last night’s school board meeting the board unanimously voted to extend Dr. Larry Sullivan’s contract for a second year. We initially scheduled a search for a long term superintendent later this school year but our experience with Dr. Sullivan in helping our district stabilize its leadership has led us to ask him to stay a second year.
This process has helped us see that the work we do both as a board and a district takes time. Dr. Sullivan is providing leadership and guidance as we work to shape our school district for the future. The board is excited to work with Dr. Sullivan through the challenges ahead this school year and into next.
The board and Dr. Sullivan are eager to engage with staff, parents and community to ensure that our students have a safe and caring learning environment where all can succeed.
Thank you for all that you do to serve our children.
