New Elementary School Will Keep the Harrison Name
The South Lane School District Board of Directors voted unanimously to keep the new elementary school name Harrison Elementary School. Board members cited the importance of listening to the opinions of the community in making their decision. The naming process was narrowed down to six names in December and the public had an opportunity to vote for one of those names.
Overwhelmingly, the community supported keeping the Harrison name. One member of the community commented that the Harrison name is a legacy. "I was a student there, my parents and grandparents were students there. I've always wanted my children to feel the same pride I had continuing in the same footsteps and I feel it would be different if the school were a different name."
The other choices were Bridges Elementary, Covered Bridges Elementary, Headwaters Elementary, Heritage Elementary, and Krista Parent Elementary. Board member, Jerry Settelmeyer, suggested utilizing the other names within the design of the new elementary school.
