Beginning with the graduating class of 2012, students will be required to demonstrate proficiency in certain essential skills, skills that are deemed critical for future success. The Essential Skills are process skills that can be applied in a variety of courses, subjects, experiences, and settings.
These Essential Skills are now graduation requirements for all Oregon students. The proficiency skills are as follows:
- Read and comprehend a variety of text
- Write clearly and accurately
- Apply mathematics in a variety of settings
Students prove that they have mastered the Essential Skills by earning at or above an achievement standard on an assessment from one of the approved categories. To graduate, students must meet specific standards for each skill on the high school statewide assessment (SBAC), or on one of the below assessments.
