We're now into our second full week of school, and it's great to see students settling into their schedules and daily routines. Teachers are really starting to dig into some fun and engaging material in their classes, and the energy in the building has been wonderful to see!
Students are also beginning to sign up for their flex classes this coming week. We're excited to have this time built into the day; it allows us to work with some students in smaller, focused groups while others get to choose from several engaging free flex options!
We're also excited to share that this year's big fundraiser, the Lap-a-Thon, will be supported by SNAP! Our 7th and 8th graders took home information about this today, so keep an eye out at home. We'll be posting more next week about how to sign up and support your child and LMS.
Reminder: If a student receives 2 or more tardies in one day, they will receive a lunch detention the following day. This policy began this week for our 7th and 8th graders and will start next week for our 6th graders.
Thank you for your continued support in helping your student get to class on time; every minute in the classroom counts!
Warmly,
Laura Clark
Principal

As our students grow, so do their technology privileges and responsibilities — a great opportunity for families to grow together, too! Navigating technology as a family helps build trust, understanding, and healthy habits that serve students well now and in the future.
Each week, I'll be posting 3 questions for parents to consider discussing with their teens, opening the door for meaningful conversations about safe and responsible technology use.
Here are this weeks family questions:
- If you had an alarm that played a sound to remind you to do a goal, what sound would it play and why?
- How is passive screen time (watching videos) different from active screen time (creating a video or learning something new)? Why is active screen time a better use of our time?
- What is a good "if-then" plan for when you finish homework early? (Example: IF I finish my homework by 6 PM, THEN I can spend the next 30 minutes reading a book or playing a game.)

September is Attendance Awareness Month, and this year's theme, "Your Presence Matters," reminds us that every student, family, and staff member helps build a culture of belonging at school.
Middle school is a pivotal time for identity and belonging; students are discovering who they are and building the social connections that shape their confidence for years to come, and missing school disrupts that process in ways that are hard to make up later. It's also a time when academic content builds quickly day to day, so even a few absences can create gaps that are tough to close. Consistent attendance also keeps students eligible and engaged in the sports, clubs, and activities that often make school meaningful and fun.
If getting your student to school consistently has been a challenge, please reach out; we're here to help find solutions that work for your family.

Students are visiting the library on a regular basis and checkout has started.
We at Lincoln expect students to carry their book with them to every class (except for PE and Lunch), they should also be reading a book at home. Students are allowed to check out two books at a time, with a checkout period of two weeks. They are encouraged to renew their books if they are not done with them - and the two week period usually lines up with their library visit.
We have many wonderful reading options for your students - including audio books! These pre-loaded MP3 players are a great way for students to enjoy books - they do not require internet access or an app. They only require a battery and a pair of headphones, which we provide when they check out the audio book. Students are responsible for materials they check out - so please encourage your student to take care of and keep track of their library materials. The audiobooks have a cost of $50 if they are lost, so please check in with your student if they have one.
If you have any questions, please reach out to our librarian, Ms. Jill Myers - jill.myers@slane.k12.or.us. Email is the best way to reach her, as she is usually out in the library talking books with students!

Energy drinks may seem like a quick pick-me-up, but they can pose real risks for middle school-aged kids. These beverages are often loaded with high levels of caffeine and added sugar; sometimes far more than a child's body is built to handle. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children and adolescents avoid energy drinks entirely, noting that kids' smaller body size and developing brains make them especially sensitive to caffeine's effects. Common side effects in kids include sleep disruption, increased anxiety and jitteriness, a racing heart, and even mood or behavioral changes. Research has also found that middle schoolers who consume energy drinks show increased hyperactivity and inattention, which can make it harder to focus and succeed in the classroom. For all these reasons, energy drinks are not allowed on our campus so our students can stay healthy, focused, and ready to learn.
Below is an article about other schools that have done the same thing we have, including some high schools!
