Over the past year, we listened closely to our students, families, staff, and neighbors. Partnering with our community, we reflected on where we’ve been and where we want to go. Out of these conversations came our new, community-driven district maxims- three simple yet powerful principles that are uniquely South Lane, and help grow well-rounded students prepared for the future.

These three maxims proudly highlight who we are as a community and what we want for our students and schools. Our three maxims for South Lane are DIG DEEP, STAY ROOTED and GROW STRONG:

  • DIG DEEP: We work hard to build our strengths

  • STAY ROOTED: We care for our community 

  • GROW STRONG: We prepare for the future

The three maxims give meaning to our work in South Lane, while also portraying the imagery of trees and growth. The phrases Stay Rooted and Grow Strong honor our storied timber history, our local forests, and the natural beauty that surrounds us. Meanwhile, Dig Deep offers an intentional nod to our rich local mining heritage, reminding us of the grit and determination woven into our community's fabric. Together, they form our guiding compass grounded directly in our local identity, coming from the community input last year.

These maxims are not just words on paper; they represent a fundamental shift to weave our schools into a single, cohesive pathway from Pre-K through graduation connected to our community and values. By creating alignment across every grade level, we ensure that students are building well-rounded skills to prepare them for their next steps in life. We are focusing on building academic growth and essential life skills, like self-regulation, perseverance, and problem-solving, so that our graduates leave us fully prepared to navigate adulthood.

To make this vision a reality, we are also reimagining how we connect with our families and community. We know that strong schools require strong community partnerships, and transparent communication is the bedrock of that trust.
