Weekly Update

October 8, 2026
Front of Lincoln Middle School

Lincoln Families,

It has been another busy week of learning and creativity at our school! In sixth-grade Language Arts, students are developing their TEA paragraphs and strengthening their ability to organize and communicate their ideas. They are also exploring similes and metaphors to make their writing more vivid, engaging, and expressive. In Digital Media, students are learning how to turn their ideas into well-organized, practical media pieces that serve a purpose for our school community. It is exciting to see them use their creativity while building their planning and production skills!

We also completed our final day of fall MAP testing this week. We appreciate the effort students put into these assessments and look forward to using the results to support their learning. Our next round of MAP testing will take place in the winter.

We're getting ready for our lap-a-thon next Tuesday! We are excited to bring students together for a day of movement, school spirit, and fundraising to support our school. Families can help build the excitement by encouraging their students and sharing our fundraising information with friends and relatives. Whether students are completing laps, encouraging classmates, or helping spread the word, everyone has a part to play. Every lap counts, and we cannot wait to see our school community come together!

Warmly,

Laura Clark
Principal

The Weekly Roar

Kudos to the Digital Media Class!

I’m incredibly proud of our Electronic Media students and the ownership they are showing in their work. This year’s group is creating some of the strongest videos our students have produced yet, and they are doing so with much more independence than in previous years.

After receiving their general topic, students take the lead in researching, planning, and making creative decisions for their videos, with teacher approval and support along the way. For example, the group responsible for behavior reminders identifies schoolwide expectations they feel would be helpful to highlight. Students creating upcoming-events segments research what is happening at school and decide which activities and opportunities to feature. And because we do not yet have weekly dares, our “Challenge of the Week” group is designing original challenges of their own.

It has been genuinely impressive to watch students collaborate, problem-solve, and use their creativity to produce meaningful content for our school community.

From the Nurse!

Attention Families,

Our yearly South Lane Dental Clinic dental screening is coming up on October 30, 2026!

This is an incredible opportunity for students to receive a free dental screening from a certified dental hygienist.

Students are automatically enrolled in this screening. If you do not wish for your student to participate, you must complete and return the opt-out form no later than Monday, October 26, 2026.

Please note that the date printed on the opt-out form is incorrect. The correct deadline to return the form is 10/26/2026.

Please remember that opt-out forms must be completed each school year. Printed forms are available in the front office.

Lincoln Lap-a-Thon

Dear Lincoln Families,

Last week, students signed up for our lap-a-thon fundraiser. Many completed the process. There is still time for students to enter email addresses and/or phone numbers through their account.

Families are also welcome to contribute cash donations. The online option offers another way to participate, especially for friends and relatives who live outside Cottage Grove. Once your student is signed up, you or your student can share the fundraiser by email, text, social media, or a link or QR code.

The link below takes you directly to our donation page, where supporters can select a student’s name and contribute any amount they feel comfortable giving. Every donation makes a difference, and sharing the link is another great way to support our school. Please help spread the word by texting, emailing, or posting it on social media for friends and family. Thank you for helping us reach our fundraising goal!

All funds raised go to our parent club, which puts them right back into Lincoln. Your support helps make possible end-of-year field trips, other trips throughout the year, classroom food and prizes requested by teachers, and schoolwide resources such as water bottle fillers and cooking supplies. We are hoping to raise enough funds this year to purchase a new camera to help with our weekly updates and the photography in them!

Thank you for partnering with us to make more opportunities possible for Lincoln students!

Growing Together with Technology

As our students grow, so do their technology privileges and responsibilities — a great opportunity for families to grow together, too! Navigating technology as a family helps build trust, understanding, and healthy habits that serve students well now and in the future.

Each week, I'll be posting 3 questions for parents to consider discussing with their teens, opening the door for meaningful conversations about safe and responsible technology use.

Here are this weeks family questions:

  1. What’s a small thing someone’s done for you that made you feel supported?
  2. Sometimes adults think that ignoring a mean comment, post, or image will just make it go away. From your perspective, why do you think silence online can actually make the problem worse? What should adults understand about how fast things spread?
  3. When you see someone being targeted, it can feel risky to step in. What are safe and effective ways to be an upstander — online or in person — without putting yourself in danger? What’s one standard you want your family to stick to when it comes to handling bullying?
